How TF to Hire a Personal Assistant

A MF WorkshoP

“How THE FUCK [TF] do I hire a personal assistant?”

^ This was me in September of 2021,

I’ve hired all sorts of contractors and help – virtual assistants, designers, photographers, etc. I’m pretty good at delegating.

But I’d held off on hiring a personal assistant.

Not because I thought I could or needed to “do it all.” Like a lot of people, I knew I needed help. My laundry pile was enormous, I had about 1776 errands to run, I needed to buy birthday gifts and and and and

I was exhausted.

The kind of exhausted where you pull into your driveway and promptly start crying.

Yeah.

It’s like THAT.

Twitter text: Spent 4 hrs today tidying, doing laundry, putting groceries away, etc I heard the “This is stupid” sound over and over I’ve gotten better at delegating, and it’s time to level up. Hitting $50K months means more delegation. Gonna test a

Spent 4 hrs today tidying, doing laundry, putting groceries away, etc I heard the “This is stupid” sound over and over I’ve gotten better at delegating, and it’s time to level up. Hitting $50K months means more delegation. Gonna test a personal assistant IRL this week

The Problem: People tell you to hire a personal assistant –

but not HOW to hire one.

Or where to get one.

I knew I needed to hire a personal assistant. But all of the advice online was super fucking vague and mostly unhelpful.

Has this been your experience?

Real talk, hiring a personal assistant can feel like the life/business equivalent of finding Prince Charming / Princess Charming / A Charmed One / A Charming Royal Who Doesn’t Use Gendered Terms.

Ok, I’m getting off track here.

You get me. It feels HARD and VAGUE and IMPOSSIBLE.

I’m Going to Tell You How I Did It

In this workshop, I’m going to tell you exactly how I did it && the impact of having someone wash my dirty underwear for me.

Specifically, I will share with you:

  • How Much to Pay: Share the math of hiring a personal assistant

  • How I Recruited: Where TF I found one – and where I looked

  • Job Posting Terminology: The job listing I used & what words I made sure to use

  • How I Discuss Covid Precautions: Thanks, I hate it here

  • What my Personal Assistant Does Every Week: I’m gonna show you lists. So many lists. [Ok, like 6 or 7. I think that’s a lot.]

  • Safety & Additional Insurance Coverage I Got: Note, I’m not a lawyer insurance professional, so I could be missing coverage

  • How I Give Feedback // Get What I’m Looking For: Bumps in the road happen - and how I tackled them

After a few weeks of handwriting what I need my personal assistant to do, I’ve created a SYSTEM with a BINDER (literally who am I?) I’ve designated specific tasks for these/thurs, and left blank spaces to add in items that come up

ETHICS, PEOPLE

Listen. Some people [including myself] get veryyyy squirmy when it comes to hiring a personal assistant.

Because domestic labor has been [historically] undervalued, it can make people feel like The Bad Guy TM to hire help.

In this workshop, I’m going to talk about that. I’m going to name those feelings – and I’m going to share how I set up my relationship with my personal assistant to build in respect + apprecation.

Domestic labor is valuable! <3

Workshop Outline

In this 80 minute workshop, I’m going to:

  • Teach you how I hired + trained + systemize having a personal assistant [complete with a calendar + 12 page guide]

  • Share my many fuck-ups and glorious mistakes

  • Get really down into the gory and beautiful DETAILS, making you more empowered to hire your own personal assistant

I’ll also answer your specific questions [submitted pre-workshop].

Who is This Workshop For?

This workshop is a fit for everyone who wants to hire a person assistant - equitably!

Business GOALS FTW

This workshop is great for business owners and creators, because having a personal assistant can make you money.

Earlier this year, I designed my ~domestic management system~ and figured out that there’s about 25 hours of domestic labor + errands I have to run a week.

Those errands and tasks take energy – and it makes sense to be spending those on an PERSONAL ASSISTANT. So I can take all that time and energy – and go make money elsewhere.

OTHER GOALS - Career goals, mental health, etc

That said, a personal assistant makes sense for folks who have a demanding 9-5. There just is not enough time on the calendar to do all the things.

Offloading domestic management tasks can have a major impact on your career.

Also, real talk, having a personal assistant can help mental health. Having one has massively helped mine as someone with ADHD.

My personal assistant washed my makeup bag and cleaned my car yesterday. Holy hell hiring someone for IRL help has made such a difference in my life. Loudly crying face Usually when Friday comes, I am done. Like “stick a fork in me and tuck me into

Note: I know that Bootstraps are Bullshit.

[I’m leaving this section in here, even though it doesn’t strictly relate. I want you to know I have these politics, and the kind of space you’re entering!]

Ableism rears its ugly head when we discuss setting goals. In this workshop, I take an intersectional approach to discussing goals and meeting them.

I’m not going to tell people with chronic illnesses to “just push through it.”

In fact, in the workshop I will share what I do when issues or big problems show up.
